Juvenile Great Northern Diver (Gavia immer) Bittell, December 2015

This image shows the partially closed translucent ‘nictitating membrane’ on the eyeball. This third eyelid moves horizontally to protect the eye when the bird is diving. A number of different animals also have a similar membrane to protect their eyes.
